Written in the stars

Your horoscope this season? It is time to be in your element with the trends of Spring Summer 18.

Spring has finally sprung and now all you need is to dress the part. But with so many Spring Summer 18 trends to try out, “Which pieces do I buy?” I hear you ask. Well, my solution is found quite literally written in the stars; this spring make trends personal to you by making style choices that channel your star sign’s element. Here is how:

Earth - Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

All of us are fond of a routine, be it going to the same place to eat - I am guilty of not having the biggest dining repertoire - or re-watching that same TV show over something new. I am of the mindset that a bit of a routine can be good for the soul, and the Earth signs know this better than anyone as simply put, you appreciate stability. Try echoing this with an oversized but structured blazer. If you find yourself wanting to give your silhouette more shape, style it with a chunky belt fastened at the waist as seen at Phillip Lim.

As practical beings, also look towards timeless prints such as checks. Though this pattern is particularly popular right now, it never goes out of style. An obvious inspiration for this is Burberry. For spring the house put a youthful touch on the style by printing it onto baseball caps. Alternatively, look towards Lowe’s floaty, pastel gingham dress for a softer approach. But for a work-wear appropriate way of wearing the print, let Cher Horowitz be your style icon and try a plaid skirt suit.

Then to further honour your practicality, try out the plastic rain mac trend so you’ll be fully prepared for the April showers. Chanel presented a masterclass in how to style them on the Spring Summer 18 catwalk; it’s all about wearing your best clothes as an under layer and shielding them with clear macs. Then if you’re really feeling the plastic movement, expand to a PVC bag – but be aware this will mean your handbag contents becomes part of your outfit and crumpled receipts and tangled earphones are not always the best look.

Air - Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Just like the wind takes on the forms of hurricanes and tornados, you too can be a powerful force of nature thanks to your extreme determination that carries you through life. So what better way to express this side of you than through a pantsuit? It’s the ultimate power symbol. Make tailoring playful by taking inspiration from Chloe’s velvet, horse-print suit or go for a more sophisticated look with Max Mara’s head-to-toe beige number – just add red lipstick if you want a pop of colour.

Then given that your driven nature makes it hard for you to sit still, also try big ruffles, they will help bring a lively feel to a look. Erdem’s lace, lilac gown, covered in ruffles, is a perfect vision of fluidity.

Though, whilst you are motivated and driven, like the wind you are unpredictable. In some moments you are calm like a gentle breeze and this is when you are a great communicator. Nurture your gentler side by channelling pastels. Take cues from Victoria Beckham and Hermès’ pastel pantsuits, or Tom Ford’s pastel pink, ruched dress complete with an 80s power shoulder in ode to your ambitious side.

Water - Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

As a water sign (I’m a cancer), I hold my hands up to our tendency to wear our hearts on our sleeves. But though this tends to give us a bad reputation for being overly emotional, let’s allow our spring wardrobe be a step forward into priding our vulnerability. Start by introducing florals to showcase your hopeless romantic side; Dolce and Gabanna put a contemporary twist on florals with a white silk two-piece, featuring prints of roses. For a daintier touch, look no further than Valentino’s Victorian-esque, long-sleeved, floaty A-line dress with intricate pink floral detailing.

If you’re further desiring to foster your willingness to be emotionally vulnerable, mirror this with the sheer trend. Locate your prettiest underwear set and layer a sheer dress over the top as seen at Christopher Kane and Fendi. But if you’re not one to flaunt your undergarments, look to Dior where a sheer midi-skirt was matched with a fun pair of sequinned hot pants - after all, it’s not all deep feelings and no play.

But just like the dynamic nature of water, vulnerability isn’t all we have to offer. Our emotional souls make us compassionate beings. Add a cardigan to your wardrobe to reflect you warm, kind-hearted self. For Spring Summer 18, think cardigans with an edge, less your grandma’s wardrobe. Christopher Kane put a cold-shoulder twist on the humble garment, whilst Alexander McQueen jazzed up an oversized pink cardigan by adding zips and jewelled embellishments. Make the piece formal by layering it over a floor-length slip dress or give it a casual feel with a pair of jeans.

Fire - Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Given the name, it makes sense that any fire signs I have met are the people with the most vibrant and sparky personalities. Mirror your unabashed nature by hopping on the bold colour dressing train – from Versace to Acne Studios, the Spring Summer 18 runways were covered in primary colours. Balenciaga showed how to go full force with the trend with a long, lemon coloured slip dress, worn over a slim fitting and long-sleeve yellow top. This of course was styled with their controversial mustard platform crocs, which please do try if you are feeling extra bold.

Eveningwear wise, show off how you light up the dark with the sparkle trend. Halpern’s colourful, high-waist and sequined flared trousers paired with a roll-neck, glittery silver top is a great place to start for outfit ideas. But if you want a more polished look, take inspiration from Molly Goddard; a silver sequined, 50s-style midi-skirt was styled with a buttoned-up, yellow satin blazer.

But don’t forget, you are also erratic just like the irregular flicker of flames, meaning one minute you radiate confidence and are happy-go-lucky and the next you surprise people with your strong sentiments. Celebrate this complexity with the print clashing trend. Armani seamlessly captured the style by pairing a boxy, Grecian print inspired jacket with airy, pin striped trousers. It may look like an explosion happened over your clothes, but that is the nature of fire. So remember; whatever your element, embrace it and wear it with pride this season.
