Steal Harry Styles’ grandad-chic looks

Updated: Oct 12, 2020

It’s no secret that Mr Styles is a sartorial God; between his glitzy Gucci suits that dominate Instagram and his proven ability to spark a pearl necklace renaissance, he has the fashion world wrapped around his ring-clad, manicured finger. But something that really peaks my fancy when it comes to the realm of Harry-fashion, is his fondness for grandad-chic looks.

Grandparent fashion – that’s definitely not an industry term, but let’s pretend it is - has been having a moment amongst fashionistas for a while now. Just look at how crochet and patchwork-infused garments took the SS20 shows by storm and the recent surge in demand for vintage Laura Ashley prairie dresses.

However, to nail this trend, the devil is in the details, i.e. incorporating elements that create the chic-feel which Harry does oh so well. To channel grandad-chic à la Harry, look no further than the list below:

1. The counting sheep look

Never before had sheep received as much air-time as when Harry stepped out onto the NYC streets adorning this cosy Lavin sweater vest in 2019. As usual, Harry was ahead of the sartorial game; variations of the humble, knitted number sprung up all over the AW20 catwalks - from Miu Miu to Dior and Gucci. At the recent Copenhagen Fashion Week, the Scandi style set were pictured welcoming the trend with open arms, pairing their sweaters with raw-hem denim shorts and floral maxi dresses.

To give your sweater vest the Harry touch, it should be layered over a pattern-clashing roll-cuff shirt - just remember to match the colours up as this will make things easier when you throw the curveball pink loafers into the mix.

2. The cardigan that went viral

A grandad without a cardigan is like a Frenchman without his baguette, it’s just wrong. Our favourite grandad-chic dressing man (Harry, duh) knows this, but in true fashion trailblazer form, he doesn’t opt for any old cardigan. Oh no sweet reader. When sound checking for The Today Show back in February, Harry donned a bold, primary-coloured patchwork JW Anderson cardigan and the internet has never been the same since.

In the height of lockdown, Jonathan Anderson dropped instructions on how to make the sold-out cardigan. Cue everyone and their mother having a crack at recreating the piece and an explosion of #harrystylescardigan TikTok videos detailing first time knitting journeys.

Harry styles the vibrant piece with dark-wash flared Gucci jeans, white Vans and a graphic tee - ‘cause he’s just effortlessly cool like that.

3. When Grandma met Grandpa

Harry is renowned for bending gender rules when it comes to fashion. Exhibit A: this get-up he wore to the Brit Awards 2020 that sees him enter grandma and grandpa-chic territory.

He wears a 70s-esque brown suit, lavender wool jumper that wouldn’t go amiss in the clothing section of an M&S and a BCE (big collar energy) shirt, which whilst very on-trend, looks as if it’s taken inspiration from your nan’s doilies.

And let's not forget the endearing additions of his beloved pearl necklace and Gucci Mary-Janes worn over white socks, because after all, grandparents recognise comfort is key.

Here, Harry spices up the grandad staple of rust-coloured cord trousers by pairing them with Old Skool Vans - loved by indie kids and Kendall Jenner alike – and an embroidered bomber jacket by Bode (time to call up that friend who got bit by the embroidery bug during lockdown).

The cord and muted colour pallet scream 70s which is an era very much en vogue. During the AW20 shows, it felt as if all the big-name designers were eager to showcase their take on the iconic time period. See: Celine’s collection that Vogue hailed as perfect for “modern day Penny Lanes” or Saint Laurent and The Row’s update on 70s tailoring.

When recreating this retro-inspired look, be sure to add the Harry-signature pearl necklace.

Forget meet me in the hallway, meet me rifling through my grandad’s wardrobe.
